Kedarnath is probably the holiest Shiva Temple in India , situated at about 11500 ft above sea level in the Garhwal Himalayas. The river Mandakini arises here from the icy glaciers of the towering mighty snow peaks which form the magnificent backdrop to the temple . This river along with the Alaknanda and the Bhagirathi join together to form the great Ganga. Legend has it that Kedarnath Temple was built in the ancient times by the Pandavas , the heroes of Epic Mahabharata .

Vasuki Tal is a lake situated at about t 15500 feet above sea level and is 'almost ' vertically above the Kedranath Temple on the left bank of the Mandakini river. It is frozen for most part of the year . In September after the rains it is full of "Brahma Kamals" , a special type of lotus .
